Clos du Chêne Vert 1995

Clos du Chêne Vert (Chinon red wine)
Description

This wine produced from the slopes of the town of Chinon is very special, but this year it has a particular elegance and bearing which is surprising.
Replanted in 1976, this vineyard is celebrating its twentieth birthday in particularly fine fashion with the 1995 vintage.
The deep garnet-red colour and aromas of fennel, green-gages and bitter chocolate of this full, clean and elegant Chinon wine can be drunk in three or four years, but it can also be cellared for some considerable time.
Dated April 8, 1996
Tasting notes

The tannins are melting away with ageing. Animal and vegetable notes dominate over tangible fruit.
Breathing a must for tasting.
Dated September 16, 2006
Tasting advice

Drink after breathing or wait a little bit more. Peak 2010.
Comment on the vintage and the 1995 harvest

The really hot summer of 1995 and very reasonable yields produced a really superb crop of grapes.
After some very fine summer rain and the return of the sun, we were able to wait until September 29th before we started picking, and the harvest took place in ideal conditions, lasting until October 20th.
The wines produced have clean, deep colours, solid tannins and very firm acidity. They remind us a little of some of our 1990's or even 1989's for the best. Some of these latter are even reminiscent of the superb 1964 vintage, especially on our side of the river.
