Les Varennes du Grand Clos 1995

Les Varennes du Grand Clos (Chinon red wine) |
 |
Description

The clay-chalk, slightly silica soil of this plot never disappoint.
In appearance, aromas and length of cellaring, this wine usually gives us everything, but the 1995 vintage has surpassed itself in potential.
The very deep colour takes one on to a lovely floral nose: wallflowers, of course, and mignonette, and even a touch of hyacinth and carnation. On the palate one finds morello cherry and hazelnut.

Tasting notes

A short breathing time and this wine’s bouquet is complete, with the presence of red fruit, flowers and just a hint of animal. A great elegance emerges.

Comment on the vintage and the
1995 harvest

The really hot summer of 1995 and very reasonable yields produced a really superb crop of grapes.
After some very fine summer rain and the return of the sun, we were able to wait until September 29th before we started picking, and the harvest took place in ideal conditions, lasting until October 20th.
The wines produced have clean, deep colours, solid tannins and very firm acidity. They remind us a little of some of our 1990's or even 1989's for the best. Some of these latter are even reminiscent of the superb 1964 vintage, especially on our side of the river. |
