Les Varennes du Grand Clos 1996

Les Varennes du Grand Clos (Chinon red wine) |
 |
Description

The wine from the clayey-limestone, slightly siliceous slope of this plot can never really be disappointing.
Its appearance and aromas, as gratifying as ever, and intense velvety carmine robe combine with a fine floral ensemble of daffodils, laurel and lime-blossom, opening the way to a mouth brimming with delicious cherry and hazelnut on a velvety background of prunes, waffles and angelica confit.

Tasting notes

The great richness of this vintage is expressed fully here: red fruit, blackcurrant, pleasant tannins, with some animal notes…
A great pleasure awaits after an hour’s breathing.

Comment on the vintage and the
1996 harvest

A comparison made between the 1996 and 1976 rainfall and sunshine curves, despite slightly lower temperatures, showed a great similarity.
Harvests were spread over three weeks, with only 10 cutting days, in warm, dry weather (not a single drop of rain!).
With superb robes, ranging from the very pronounced, brilliant pink of a full, almost fleshy Rosé, to the dark reds typical of great vintages.
All shades of ruby and purple through to the deepest crimson; a very fresh nose that will come into its own very soon; acidities in the mouth accompanied by fine tannins: the sum total of these qualities, the reserve of great years only, points to a truly great vintage. |
