On the clayey-limestone soil of Varennes du Grand Clos, the vines cover a gentle slope that leads up to a big walnut tree. Young, strong and unshaven, the porter perspires lightly in the cool morning air. There is nothing to distinguish him from the other porters of his age, except a very identifiable accent: "Ciboire ! Charge pas trop la bêête" (a truly Canadian way of speaking).
In
the land of the renaissance and humanism, the Domaine Charles
Joguet cultivates the passion of both men and wine. Of the
50 grape-pickers who trudge up and down the rows of vines,
clippers in hand, ten are from Quebec. These young neighbours
of America are discovering France, thanks to the vines.
A good way as any of earning money to continue their travels.
"This friendly group"», as described
by Alain Delaunay, manager of the Domaine, "was welcomed
with enthusiasm". These young students are
lodged at Tavant, a few kilometres from the domain,
in a renovated 15th century building, which was once the
conventual buildings.
