A historic vineyard in Sazilly, at the foot of the gravelly terrace, Les Varennes reveals the full complexity of the great terroirs of the Left Bank. Ripe black fruits, spicy notes, and deep minerality blend into a full-bodied wine with silky tannins. Great harmony and length, with aging potential of 15 to 25 years.

        ○ Long-Aging Wine, Full-Bodied
        ○ Red Wine - AOP Chinon
        ○ Organic Farming
        ○ Cabernet Franc - 12.5% vol.
        ○ Technical Data Sheet

In 2024, a cool, very humid, and moderately sunny climate set the pace for the vineyard. The cool spring, with frequent rain and little sunshine, slowed the start of the growing cycle. For Cabernet Franc, the long flowering period began as early as June 4, and veraison was late, occurring in the second half of August. Constant pressure from downy mildew and powdery mildew required constant vigilance throughout the season. The late veraison and slow ripening make 2024 a vintage that demands patience, where each harvest date must be precisely adjusted. For Les Varennes du Grand Clos, the grapes were harvested on October 23. This gradual ripening emphasizes freshness and tension—the hallmarks of a demanding year managed with great care.

        Les Varennes du Grand Clos

An emblematic parcel planted between 1962 and 1976, Les Varennes du Grand Clos embodies the finesse and complexity of the Sazilly terroir.

        From vine to cellar

Located at the foot of the gravelly terrace on the left bank of the Vienne in Sazilly, these four and a half hectares of vines planted between 1962 and 1976 flourish on a unique silico-clay and silico-limestone terroir. Average yield 40 hl/ha.

Cold pre-fermentation maceration for 10 days, a minimum 4-week vatting period and vinification at below 21°C with frequent pumping-over and punching-down reveal the full complexity of this cuvée. Blending of free-run and press wines for malolactic fermentation in barrels. Aged for 15 to 16 months in partially renewed French oak barrels (new barrels for 4 wines), followed by 6 months' maturation in vats before bottling. Long-ageing wines that assert their finesse and elegance right from their youth.

Very pure, featuring beautiful acidity that imparts freshness and energy, with cherry pit and red currant fruit notes gliding along. Medium tannins provide structure and support. The finish is long and expressive. Best from 2021 through 2029.

15,5 / 20 - Michel Bettane - Bettane Desseauve - In Magnum, 2019 : "A pretty four-hectare vineyard, of which just over three are in production, planted from 1962 to 1976 on a silico-chalky base that extends the Clos de la Dioterie in Sazilly.Much more complex nose, both root and truffle, with a return of cedar and tobacco in the tannic support. More character than 2012."

        MILLENNIUM 2010

16 / 20 - "A pretty four-hectare vineyard, of which just over three are in production, planted from 1962 to 1976 on a silicocalcareous base that extends the Clos de la Dioterie in Sazilly.

Strong color, full-bodied, a little fuller than the 2014, firm, complete in its construction on the palate and not yet ripe. A long-ageing vintage that won't disappoint."
